Project description
U.S. 331 is being widened to four lanes between the south end of the Clyde B. Wells Bridge across Choctawhatchee Bay and the U.S. 98 intersection. The $12 million improvement project also includes safety and drainage upgrades, new stormwater retention ponds, traffic signals, sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
U.S. 331 is the major north-south transportation artery in Walton County. Visitors use the corridor to travel to the Beaches of South Walton. A large number of commuters living in central and northern Walton County use the highway to commute to their jobs in the rapidly growing southern portion of the county. In addition, the roadway is a primary hurricane evacuation route.
These factors make improving U.S. 331 an important priority for the Florida Department of Transportation and the citizens of Walton County.
To minimize traffic impacts, work will be performed in phases. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times on U.S. 331. In addition, work requiring lane closures within 500 feet of the U.S. 98/U.S. 331 intersection will take place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The lane closure restrictions are designed to minimize traffic impacts during times of peak travel demand.
C. W. Roberts Contracting, Inc. of Hosford, Fla. is constructing the project for the Florida Department of Transportation, District Three. Genesis CE&I Services, Inc. of Crestview is providing construction engineering and inspection support for FDOT.
Work on the project began in August 2008 and is scheduled for completion by early 2010.
